In the summer 2009, Fresh Outdoor introduced BeachBox, a dressing room with outer surfaces that could be used as a tool for advertising. The dressing rooms were situated on public beaches.
PALPA, Suomen Palautuspakkaus Oy, a company that administers the recycling of beverage containers and promotes recycling in Finland, was among the first to try the new product at Aurinkoranta beach in Vuosaari.
The PALPA campaign was customized according to the needs of the client by bringing a separate collection tray next to BeachBox, to which people could return drink containers and also take them and return the containers to returning vendors. In addition to visibility, additional value to the campaign was created by the opportunity to contribute to the cleanliness of the surroundings.
At several beaches, the surprise was a positive one this summer. The BeachBoxes brought to the beaches responded to the needs of both the consumer and the advertiser. Swimming instructors forwarded feedback from the users of the beaches: ”The cubicles seemed like quality work, the wooden structures fit the medium and the wooden floor was warm against bare feet. Also the placement of the cubicles near the waterline gathered praise. The special solution for the return of empty bottles and cans by PALPA was also received well in Aurinkolahti.”
The purpose of PALPA is to take care of the recycling of redeemable drink containers and to promote this activity. The goal is to recover effectively empty drink bottles and cans. The purpose of PALPA is to promote a message of the importance of recycling and to keep the container return percentage high – for the environment. ”We were taking part in the introduction of new, clean swimming booths at the beautiful beach of Aurinkolahti – the collection tray has worked as was planned. It is nice to notice that group spirit has not died, the cost savings to the society are generated and the environment is kept clean for us and for the coming generations,” says Johanna Ljundberg from PALPA.
”These new tools for advertising offering customisation options, such as the trays for collecting the empty bottles and cans installed to swimming booths, respond very well to modern demands. This adds functionality and makes consumers participate. After all, in the beautiful summertime, the nearby environment is an extension of one's own living room. As a result of this project, we are considering introducing the solution also to other beaches next summer,” Ljundberg confirms.
Positive feedback from the campaign came from many different directions.”The beach was very clean. On most mornings the return tray was empty, young boys had already collected bottles and cans and taken them to the store. I believe that a stroke of genius such as this would help to keep other beaches clean as well”, says a worker of the Maritime division of the City of Helsinki, who inspected the beach and the tray every morning.
